no doubt you have heard about the nurse that thumbed her nose to the state and went out of the house in spite of being ordered to stay at home.

Should the law and police officers arrest American citizens who decline flu shots. More Americans die from the flu than will ever die from Ebola. I remember seeing polio victims. Hospitals were open to treat and isolate tuberculosis patients when I was young. When I first went to Europe, a small pox vaccine was a requirement to enter England. The vaccine was scary. Maybe I did not want to pay tribute to the Beatles, the Inns of Court, and Shakespeare after all. All these issues should have been discussed in the public arena before Ebola hit.

I am a selfish person. There are enough problems in my life without unnecessary ones. According to a respected book on Ebola, scientists expect certain fruit bats located in West Africa because there evolutionary process is so old that it boggled my mind to considered. It is better to have Africa developed but the expansion may have disturbed a previously quiet habitat. The book said that bats account for about 1/5 of all animals. They travel thousands of miles. It is better to fight ISIS and the Taliban in a variety of ways in the Middle East. Fight Ebola at its source. It is in America's national security interest to encourage doctors and scientists to learn about it in Africa.

Is it true that bats are so populous? I don't see them but I am glad I don't see them.

This is the culture from which Maoism emerged. Even in the 60s, I never went around with a little red book. Mao prob. caused more people to die than any figure in history. I would love to hear what freedoms and personal autonomy are being asserted in China. Excuse me if I do not worship. Western civilization has its strong points. Internet access, freedom of the press, free speech rights, due process, writ of habeus corpus, and equal protection are crucial. I remember Kent State and Tianmen Square.The American casualties were far less. I remember how regular people understood the grief over Kent State. We were always able to petition our government and go home in freedom. The New York Times ran an article on Hong Kong tycoons and their neutral stance to democracy. Let Hong Kong be a center of democracy and basic freedom.

This is not a settlement. It is a jury award of damages in a civil suit. The WT evidently did not offer enough money for a secret settlement. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that punitive damage awards must meet certain standards so the amount will probably be reduced. These cases are dependent on the facts so it may be limited.

Why don't parents of an abused child go straight to police, why go to an elder first??

i hope i don't come across as judgemental but having read a lot on the current child abuse cases and the different threads on here, i am left wondering why on earth a parent of an abuse victim would go to an elder with the problem first and not straight to police?.

as a parent myself i know that if anything like that happend to my child (this applies to when i was still an active jw as well as now) i would not hesitate in going to the authorities as soon as i found out, it wouldn't of crossed mine or my husbands mind to go to an elder.

maybe after we had reported it but definitely never as the first port of call.

JehoNvah's Witnesses are not normal people. They are isolated from the world. The world is evil. Civil authorities are repeatedly mocked. Theocratic warfare means they can blatantly lie to police and courts. Caesar's things are not rendered to Caesar. Individual Witnesses trust elders more than police. They know the elders from the massive intrusions to their private lives. Police are scary to most people. No state legislature is going to pass a law that you cannot go to clergy.

When you consider the size and assets of Jehovah's Witnesses, this is no epidemic. Lawsuits are routine for any business or organization of a certain size. The WT is in a better legal position than the Roman Catholic Church b/c of the organizational structure. I imagine every religion is being sued. In fact, I suspect that members of main stream religions might be even more likely to sue b/c these people are not so enmeshed and isolated. Their boundaries and sense of outrage has not been compromised. Members here post comments from their Witness relatives that the organization is now perfect under Jehovah's protection. It cannot happen to their children. Santa Claus exists.

The number of lawsuits filed is not a sign of an organization under stress. Actual settlements and damage awards, finalized on appeal, are a much better measure. Don't get your hopes up.

I would not term those large eyes fine art. Commercial art, maybe. Bad art, yes. They were certainly popular.

You are not contagious until symptoms appear. This is a fact. I don't think it is prudent to return from treating ebola and go on every subway line and then go bowling. I would stay close to home and only frequent stores in my neighborhood. The issue is public panic. History shows that times of great stress pose the greatest danger to our form of government. I don't have time to be an expert on all the reporting. University Hospital in Newark did outrageous stuff to me recently in the past weeks. I had no infectious disease. She is a fighter and antagonist. It would not be my way of educating the public. Different people have different skill sets. I respect her.
